200 South Main Street

EAST WINDSOR - No one was injured in a two-alarm fire
that shut down Route 5 Friday afternoon.
The fire started at about 2 p.m. in a mixed-use commercial complex at 200
South Main St. in the Warehouse Point section of town. Firefighters from
Windsor Locks, Enfield, South Windsor, and Ellington helped the Warehouse
Point and Broad Brook fire departments fight the blaze, Warehouse Point Fire
Chief James Barton said. Fire officials did not yet know the fire's exact
cause Friday. The building, which was being renovated, was not occupied at the
time of the fire.
Barton said they think the fire may have started near the first-floor bathroom
area and moved quickly into the wall. "It is balloon frame, so the fire went
into the attic," he added. The firefighters used two hydrants to fight the
fire, Barton said. At about 3 p.m., Barton said, heavy fire was coming out of
the roof. Firefighters got out of the attic area at that time. They then
focused on the front of the building and started protecting the other
exposures, Barton said. "We launched an interior attack" on the fire, he
added, to contain the fire and keep it from going into the auto body shop
nearby where there were highly flammable materials. "We did the best we
could do. We had the fire under control about 4 p.m.," Barton said. The fire
was fully contained by 9 p.m. After the fire was under control, the
firefighters worked to pull the ceilings apart. "We were pulling
ceilings because the fire got between the old roof and the new metal roof on
top. The metal roof holds all the heat in," Barton said. "The guys did a
real great job - it was a real comprehensive fire," Barton said.
